Ask Joe & Larry
|
What's the best option for an octopus on my gear?
|
Larry:   I know Joe is going with an octo inflator... and I must agree. But some just don't like them. So if going with a conventional octo, I really like the
Mares Brigade Viper. This is my new favorite because no matter where the other diver is - on my right - or left I can hand it to them, and it can't be upside down.
Since I usually have better air consumption than my students... I normally have more air left at the end of the dive. With this setup, it is easier to let them breath off my tank in case we need to do an extended safety stop.

Joe:   Gee... how thoughtful... I personally don't dive with anyone who is dumb enough to run out of air... but as they say.. (@#$&) Stuff Happens..
So some sort of alternate air source is necessary. But my idea is less is more. Less hoses equals less hassles, so I like an octo inflator setup.
The best in my book is the Zeagle Octo Z octo on the inflator hose. This one also has the nice feature that you can unscrew it in a few seconds, and pack it with your reg instead of bouncing around in the dive bag - and the screw connection fits a garden hose end - so just screw in a hose, turn on the water, and rinse the inside by letting the water rush in and then out the BC over pressure valves. (Uh... make sure yours has those!)
Now if you're not familiar with an octo inflator... it works like this: In an out of air emergency, you normally find out your buddy is out of air because they have stolen your reg already! Or if not they are swimming at you with no reg and eyes as big as saucers. Instead of looking for your octo - you just give them your reg (which they really, really want anyway), then you grab your power inflator hose and you breath off the inflator octo. It makes it much faster in an emergency situation... that's why I like it!!
